Waverley v Grange Racketball 8/8/2012

On a pleasant evening in Newington Waverley hosted this week's match on some of the warmest courts known to man. First into the sweat box were Paul Dale and Nick Lyth taking on Carole and Brian respectively. Two tight matches followed but unfortunately for Waverley, Carole's racketball skills didn't match her catering skills and Brian couldn't take advantage of all the lets Nick was offering so after some considerable extended battles the Grange were two up, 1-3 and 2-3.

Next up was John Matthew in the battle of the John's. After asking Grieve and Beames for some coaching for his game, John quickly ignored everything he had been told and went about thrashing the ball as hard as he could in his usual fashion. Despite many attempts to lose the match, John held out for another (and his first ever) Grange victory 2-3.

Andrew (Beames) was next up against Domenic who for some inexplicable reason had arrived in his pyjamas. Domenic's insider knowledge, having played several times at the Grange recently, gave him a distinct advantage and he showed his improvement by winning a game but sadly for him, not the match, 1-3.

I was on next against Bruce and a masterful display saw another Grange victory. Truth be told I was delighted to scrape out of this with a very close 0-3 score line as I may have died if I'd had to play a 4th.

Last up was the Mike (Gorzer) v Mike rematch. After a sparky affair in the previous encounter a large crowd assembled on the balcony waiting for the fireworks to start. It was however all remarkably polite with the first defeat of the evening for the Grange after a hard fought match 0-3.

As usual, good food, good chat and a few beers followed in the bar and thanks are again due to Waverley for being great hosts.

David Grieve, Team Captain.
