Sunday 29th April 2007.

Scotland won the toss and elected to field on a cold, cloudy morning.

Yorkshire (White, Vaughan, McGrath, Gough, Hoggard, et al) 259 from 50 overs.

Scotland 217 all out after 49.3 overs.

I was there with wee James for 2 hours (Grange gets 50 tickets for members) and it was baltic - how those fielders expected to grab a ball with frozen hands I'll never know.
It looked like Scotland might struggle to get to 150 but in the end they kept the result in suspense to the bitter cold end. For an amateur (Wright) to almost topscore compared to the test cticketer just shows the trouble England have with their captain. Here is a report...

Run-outs seal defeat for Saltires
Friends Provident Trophy, Edinburgh: Yorkshire 259-8 bt Scottish Saltires 217 by 42 runs
Scorecard
Yorkshire triumphed at The Grange after Scotland had four players run out chasing the Tykes' total of 259-8.

England skipper Michael Vaughan made 31 for Yorkshire before Anthony McGrath (66), Younis Khan (41) and Jacques Rudolph (34) gave them a solid base.

But mix-ups saw Saltires openers Fraser Watts and Majid Haq both run out, as were Colin Smith and Neil McCallum.

McCallum's 40 and Craig Wright's 59 had given the score some respectability but they were eventually all out for 217.

Yes, a bad weekend for cricket in Edinburgh, the firsts match in the SNCL(Scots National cricket League) was also rained off. If both side get 3 points for a rain-off, could you lose the league by being on the Wet coast?

Sunday 20th May sees Nottinghamshire visit the Grange.

Notts haven't played many trophies since the war (second world version) but former players since 1945 include Sir Richard Hadlee, Sir Gary Sobers, Paul Johnson and Derek Randall.

Weather - the forecast is windy and wet.

Nottinghamshire 293-6 (50 ovs) bt Scotland 216 (50 ovs) by 77 runs.

England wicket-keeper Chris Read smashed a thrilling 58 as Notts defeated Scotland by 77 runs.

Read blitzed 32 in an over from the Saltires overseas professional Ian Moran and hit a total of four sixes as 76 came from the final four overs.

Jason Gallian's measured 97, plus cameos from Mark Ealham and Graeme Swann added up to a total of 293-6.

The Scots soon lost both openers and Moran's day of misery was complete when he was bowled first ball by Swann.

Now if only Scotland could play someone like Ireland. We'd beat them.

Sunday 27th May, Old Trafford, Manchester, Lancashire.

Lancashire's Friends Provident Trophy campaign slumped further when they lost by 10 runs to Scotland at Old Trafford.

The visitors, beaten in all four previous games, made 142-7 in a match reduced to 22 overs each by rain.

Ryan Watson top-scored with 43, while Sri Lanka star Muttiah Muralitharan was expensive despite taking three wickets.

In reply, Lancashire never got going despite 44 from Steven Croft and they were bowled out for 132 off the final ball to go down to a fourth loss.

It was an abject batting display from Lancs, which began with skipper Mark Chilton being trapped lbw playing across the line to John Blain, who bowled Australian star Brad Hodge.

Mal Loye missed with a slog-sweep and saw his off-stump uprooted and when Gareth Cross was stumped charging down the wicket to Majid Haq, they were in deep trouble at 70-5.

Dominic Cork and Steven Croft attempted to lift the scoring but they were brilliantly caught in the deep and with that went any chances of Lancashire snatching victory.

Muralitharan hammered two sixes in his 27 off only 12 balls but it all came too late.

A little birdie tells me that Scotland have just arranged a one-day match against Pakistan on Sunday 1st July at the Grange.

Now that would be a match to go to...

The much-awaited Scotland vs Pakistan match on Sunday 1st July 2007 was a complete wash-out.

Scotland's next match is against the West Indies as part of the International Quadrangular Series in sunny Dublin on Thursday 12th July. After that it's the Netherlands on Friday 13th in Belfast and then the big crunch, Ireland away in Belfast on Sunday 15th July.

Many thanks to all those at the Grange club who were most welcoming to myself and young Jamie who seemed to enjoy himself, probably because his umbrella worked and mine had a hole in it.

Oh well, bad luck Richard. Shame we couldn't order up the weather - I hope you invited the pakistanis for a hit on the squash court ;-)

Ireland took advantage of the home wicket to beat Scotland by 22 runs in Belfast on Sunday 15th July 2007. Andre Botha starred with both the bat and the ball for the Irish.

I'm sure that Scotland will beat England next season.
